HISTORY
A 1930
Joo Long Public School, began as a small school of 34 pupils in a shophouse at 13 m.s. Jurong Road with Mr Yak Woh Hoon acting as the principal as well as teacher.
1934
Joo Long moved to Kee San Estate at Jalan Bahar.
1935
Mr Ng Chong Yin took over the task of running the school which by then housed 90 pupils in three classrooms. Pupils then were taught English as a second language.
1936
Mr Yak Kong Eng replaced Mr Ng and took on the role of head of the school for a year
1937
Mr Ng Kek Chong succeeded Mr Yak when he left the school.
1939
Mr Tay Foo Chong was handed the baton which he held on till the Japanese Occupation started.
1941
- 1945
Japanese Occupation during this time left Joo Long with nothing but ruins.
1945
War ended and people rallied around to help rebuild the school.

1946
Joo Long re-opened with Mr Ng Chong Yin as the next principal.
1947
Mr Tan Guan Hong headed the school for a year.
1948
Mr Lew Thong Eng became the new principal. Mr Lew supervised a search for a site to build a new school.
1949
Director of Education, Mr Vickens and the Chief Inspector of School, Mr Lee Chee Wah, helped suggest improvements for the school. A School Building Fund Committee was formed to raise funds for a new school at Upper Jurong Road. Mr Khor Boon Buck was invited to be the principal of the school.
1950
The school celebrated its 21st Anniversary by moving to its new premises at Upper Jurong Road. The new school, consisting of three classrooms and a Teacher's Common Room, was more spacious than the old premises in the shophouse
1957
Joo Long became a government- aided school with the implementation of the Government White Paper. It also had a new principal, Mr Chew Guan Thiam
1959
With the neighbouring areas around the school developing rapidly, the school's population too increased. The School Building Fund Committee raised funds through staging a two-night variety show at the Happy World Stadium to build eight classrooms and a tuckshop.
1963
Mr Chang Teck San took over the post of Principal to oversee the new expansion of the School Building
1964
Mr Yeo Kim Leong took over from Mr Chang to become the principal
1975
The school bought a school bus to alleviate the transport problems of its pupils.
1980
A cemented outdoor basketball court was constructed and a modern flush system was built
1981
The school celebrated its Golden Jubilee.
1982
An air-conditioned language laboratory was added to the school facilities.Pupil population was then 831, one of the highest among the Chinese-Aided schools in Jurong at year
1984
The Name "Joo Long" was pinyinised to "RULANG" in 1984, when the school was converted into a government school
1985
Pupil enrolment was over 2000 in two sessions, with eighty over teachers and ten non-teaching staff. Rulang was equipped with facilities of a modern school. A marble bas-relief was erected in front of the school, where it still stands today to greet all who come to the school. This marble bas-relief embodies the Philosophy of Rulang
1992
Mrs Susan Lim Poh Suan became Rulang's first lady Principal on 22 September.
1993
Mr Lee Ngian Kai became the Vice-Principal. Our pupil, Linda Nathan was the first recipient of the coveted Prime Minister's Book Prize from Rulang Primary.
1994
Rulang's Brass Band competed in the Primary School Band Competition that was held in conjunction with the SYF for the first time and received a Silver Award at the SYF.
1995
The school implemented the Accelerated Information Technology Programme (AITP) to promote computer-based learning (CBL) and prepare our pupils for the information age. Rulangnite's PSLE percentage of passes achieved in 1995 surpassed the National percentage across all subjects.
1996
The school celerated its 66th Anniversary on 6 july. Gracing the event was Mr Yeo Cheow Tong, the then Minister for Trade & Industry and MP for Hong Kah GRC as well as an Advisor of the School Advisory Committee.
1997
Rulang was identified as one of the IT demonstration school by MOE and benefitted from the infrastructural enhancements that allowed both teachers and pupils to adapt to a new era of pedagogical practices. Our pupil, Wang Sijia Furene was awarded the Prime Minister's Book Prize.
1998
The baton was passed to Mdm Lee Lai Yong. Rulang entered the year with its roots firmly placed having its school's archive tracing its history for Rulangnites. Our Alumni was formed as the tread of continuation. The old intertwined with the new and a multi-media library also surfaced. Computers could be found in every classroom and our physical facilities enhancement continued as we provided a continuous learning environment for our pupils.
1999
The team from Rulang Robotics garnered the Best Programming and Most Bizarre Robot Design Awards at the inaugural National Junior Robotics Competition. Rulangnites embarked on an immersion trip to Xincheng Garden Primary School in China.
2000
The school was awarded the Gold Award for the Trim and Fit Scheme in 2000. In conjunction with the 70th anniversary in the year 2000, two of our pupils, five teachers and a parent volunteer created the Rubear Cares book to capture the essence of Rulang : A caring community, camaraderie and our love for nature. At the National Junior Robotics Competition 2000, Rulang Robonites won the Most Bizarre Design Award and the Judges Award. RADM (NS) Teo Chee Hean, the then Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence visited Rulang on 24 March. FuntheMath Day Organised by the Mathematics Department coincided with the ministerial visit.
2001
At the SYF 2001, Rulang clinched a Silver Award each for both Chinese and Malay Dance categories and a Bronze Award for Indian Dance. At the National Junior Robotics Competition 2001, Rulangnites clinched the Championship Award (Primary Level), Most Bizarre Design Award, Nest Mechanical Award and the Judges Award. Rulang's Brownies clinched the top spot in the Brownies Solar Cooking Competition 2001. The school won the Trim and Fit Gold Award once again. Rulang's 2001 PSLE results achieved a 98.4% overall passes (including 30 EM3 pupils) which is above the national average.
2002
The 2nd Alumni Reunion cum Lunar New Year Dinner, a special fund raising event was held on 16 February at the newly completed air-conditioned school hall. The school's PRIME project was successfully completed. The 2002 graduating cohort achieved a commendable 98.9% overall passes (including 25 EM3 pupils) in their PSLE. Rulang organised an Open House for parents and the public. CyberTrek 2002 showcased how Information Technology is integrated in Rulang.
2003
Rulang Primary received the Singapore Quality Class certification by SPRING on 10 June. Xiong Lingxi received the Prime Minister's Book Prize. The school was awarded the Best Practice Awards (BPA) for Teaching & Learning. Rulang was awarded the People Developer certification. The school received its first Sustained Achievement Award (SAA) Physical Fitness. Rulang also received the HPB-MOE CHERISH Award (Bronze).
2004
Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, the then Minister for Education, visited Rulang Primary on 14 August.
2005
Mrs Cheryl Lim took over as Principal. The school was amongst the 16 schools in the pioneer batch to receive the PSE (Programme for School0based Excellence) funding to further develop Rulang's niche in robotics on 8 March. At the West Zone Robot Junior Competition 2005, Rulang Robonites swept the top four positions in Robot Rescue Mission, both first and second Positions in Robot Soccer 1-on-1 and the top position in Dancing Robot. Rulang Robonites once again, made waves at the National Junior Robotics Competition 2005 and took the top two positions in the Robot Rescue Mission category, top position in Dancing Robot and third and fourth posiitons in the Robot Soccer 1-on-1. Venturing beyond our shores, Robonites participated in the Thai King Cup International Robotics Competition 2005 and did creditably well in the international field to finish second in Dancing Robot and took the third and fourth positions in Robot Soccer 1-on-1. 4 generations of Principals met at the 5th Alumni Reunion cum Lunar New Year Dinner. At the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools, Rulangnites clinched 5 Gold, 5 Sliver and 3 Bronze Awards. Rulang's 2005 PSLE result posted a 99.7% overall passes (including 22 EM3 pupils). Rulang received once again the HPB-MOE CHERISH Award (Bronze). At the West Zone Rope Skipping Tournament, both the Junior and Senior Boys Teams as well as the Junior Girls Team won the Championship titles in their respective categories while the Senior Girls finished in second runner-up position. Voices of Rulangnites (VOR) made its debut in 2005. It was conceptualised to provide our pupils with a platform to showcase their talents. The school's Parent Support Group (PSG) was officially formed. Rulang received the Hibiscus Award (2005 / 2006) in the School Green Audit Awards. The school was awarded its second Sustained Achievement Award (SAA) Physical Fitness.
2006
The School attained the Best Practice Award (BPA) for Teaching & Learning and the Best Practice Award (BPA) for Staff Well Being. Rulang’s Singapore Quality Class certification was revalidated. Rulang received the Orchid Award (2006/2007) in the School’s Green Audit Awards. Rulang Softball Team Clinched the National Championship for the 1st time and sustained the championship for the next 3 years. In the PSLE 2006, our pupils, Vijay Periyannan and Rlangovan Sindhuja were two of the top 5 Indian pupils in the nation. Another of our pupil, Nur Alisa bte Suhaime was one of the top 5 Malay pupils in the nation. Vijay Periyannan was one of the top PSLE pupils in the nation. Rulang attained the HPB-MOE CHERISH Award (Silver). The school became a LEAD ICT school. The school received the SAA Physical Fitness, its third in consecutive years. In 2006, 608 of our pupils took great pride in presenting to our nation a Pre-parade National Day Programme in the National Stadium at Kallang. Rulang also received the Development Award National Education. Rulang hosted the MOE ExCEL Fest on 7 and 8 July.
2007
Rulang received the Outstanding Development Award (ODA) in Character Development. The school was also awarded the Thinking Culture Award (West Zone). Rulang was conferred the Lotus Award (2007 / 2008) in the Green Audit Awards. Elangovan Sindhuja and Vijay Periyannan were winners of the Prime Minister's Book Prize. The school was also conferred the prestigious School Distinction Award (SDA) in recognition of its exemplary systems and processes. Rulang was awarded the 4th SAA Physical Fitness.
2008
Rulang was awarded the Singapore Innovation Class (2008) (I-Class) for its innovation processes. The People Developer certification was revalidated. Rulang attained the Lotus Award (2008 / 2009) in the Green Audit Awards. Rulang received its fifth consecutive SAA Physical Fitness as well as clinched its first SAA Sports. The school received the HPB-MOE CHERISH Award (Sliver). The school was conferred the West Zone Centre of Excellence (WZ-COE) Robotics in recognition of the school’s strong Robotics Programme.
2009
Rulang Primary clinched the coveted School Excellence Award (SEA), the pinnacle award of MOE's Masterplan of Awards (MoA) framework. The school was awarded the BPA for student All Round Development. Rulang also received its 6th consecutive SAA Physical Fitness and its 2nd SAA Sports. Rulang received the Development Award (DA) for National Education for the 2nd time round. Robonites continued to prove their mettle at the National competitions as well as in the International arena where Rulang's teams have clinched 36 international awards since 1999. Rope Skipping was officially was accorded a Programme for School-based Excellence (PSE) at Rulang. Rulangnites have since 2007, garnered 40 international awards at Rope Skipping Competitions. During the Skipfest held on 18 November, Rulangnites made it into the Singapore Book of Record by achieving 180,628 backward skips within two hours in the group category.
