The English Language is central to pupils’ intellectual, social and emotional development and plays an essential role in all key learning areas. In Rulang, the English Department is committed to providing high quality English language learning experiences to our pupils. The department’s mission is to equip pupils with the skills to attain the level of competency to express themselves effectively in speech and writing which is the vision of the department, Confident and Competent Communicators. It therefore aims to develop pupils’ ability in using the language effectively so that all our pupils will be confident and competent learners and communicators. Pupils will be involved in a variety of learning methods aimed at developing knowledge, skills and understandings about the English language and its literature. The department advocates the use of a variety of resources, including technology. The teaching of English language in the school takes into account the context, purpose and audience. Our Literature programme introduces children to a collection of literature suited to their ages and interest. In each phase, pupils are introduced to a variety of texts. They are taught to read, analyse and interpret literary texts. To articulate perceptives, pupils learn to employ logical and critical thinking. The classroom is a learning oasis and pupils are at the centre of the learning process. Pupils are also invited to create their own poems. Reader’s Theatre is an activity that teachers use as a platform to provide opportunities for children to work creatively, using a wide variety of mediums. Our Wall of Writers (WOW) is an interactive wall that features renowned writers both locally and internationally on their literary works. The writers’ works will be put up to introduce these great writers to our pupils and to encourage them to read books written by them. Local poets and writers such as Robert Yeo, Catherine Lim, Arthur Yap and Desmond Sim will also be featured. Using this platform, pupils are exposed to a variety of genres and encouraged to cultivate a love for reading. In addition, pupils’ works such as book reviews and stories will be showcased on the wall. |
